i just discovered that the 'dr macro'-site has stored most of the short films. they also have LOADS of high quality scans from old photoprints.

phil posner writes damn well informed articles about the rather obscure bits and bobs about charles and his films and music. his latest contribution to the collection is a mustache gallery.

I knew Charlie's mustache got smaller over the years, but he really butchered it for City Lights.

Mr. Posner does have a great website, I should have added it to my original list. I love the picture he uses for his background too.

It's really obvious if you watch Mabel's Strange Predicament or see pictures, that the mustache is bigger and the shoes are not as big as they eventually were. Also, his makeup is kind of different. His face looks "harder". That's why I think that this movie WAS made before Kid Auto Races, in which he looks more like himself, even though that one was released first.

this is one thing i noticed, too. in some films the make-up is more stagey than in others. sometimes the jawline is much mor pronounced because he didn't smooth out the light grease paint. sometimes the ears really stick out. and in other cases he really went over the top with the eyebrows and eyeliner. i wonder whether those were secret messages?!?!?

Those eyebrows in City Lights. They're like big triangles!!! (He was probably sending Communistic messages. HA!).

when he lifted his right eyebrow, he was telling stalin that the message was recieved. lifting the left eyebrow meant everything was in order. wrigling both eyebrows meant one more actor signed onto the communist party. ;)

I love the mustache gallery! I wish I would have seen it before I did my Chaplin costume/impersonation. I had a lot of trouble with the mustache...I kept cutting them down and referring to the photos, not realizing that they were all different shapes in different movies. I knew that the mustache got smaller over the years, but I didn't realize the shape changed. I messed up about 6 fake mustaches by cutting them wrong. I should have tried for the "City Lights" look! LOL

I also found out that the fake mustache flattens out your upper lip and how much glue you put on makes a difference too...I noticed a difference in how his lips look in the various movies.

RiSi, I love your interpretation of the eyebrows sending Communist messages! LOLOLOL!

and now thanks to your field research we also have learned that not only did the mustache change, but the upper lip as well. personally, i find this very interesting. i wonder how much we don't know yet about all that make-up stuff because application has changed so dramatically since then.
